How to Keep Your Hair Happy and Healthy During Detroit's Cold Weather.

Let’s be honest—winter in Detroit can be downright brutal. Between freezing temps, harsh winds, and dry indoor heat, our hair tends to take a hit. If you’ve been noticing dryness, breakage, or a lack of shine, you’re not alone. The good news? With a little extra TLC, your hair can survive (and even thrive!) through the cold months. Here are my favorite tips to keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and beautiful all winter long.

1. Moisture Is Everything

Winter air is incredibly drying, and your hair needs all the hydration it can get.

• Hydrating shampoo and conditioner: Swap out your regular products for something extra nourishing. Look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or aloe vera to help lock in moisture.

• Deep conditioning masks: Treat your hair once a week to a deep conditioning mask. Think of it as a spa day for your strands!

• Leave-in conditioner: A lightweight leave-in conditioner can work wonders to keep your hair soft and smooth between washes.

2. Show Your Scalp Some Love

Healthy hair starts at the scalp, and winter weather can leave it feeling dry and flaky.

• Oil it up: Massage your scalp with natural oils like jojoba or coconut oil to keep it moisturized and calm any irritation.

• Don’t overdo it with shampoo: Washing your hair too often can strip away its natural oils. Try washing 2–3 times a month and use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.

• Exfoliate gently: A good scalp scrub can help remove buildup and boost circulation, which supports hair growth.

3. Protect Your Hair from the Elements

Detroit winters are no joke, but there are simple ways to shield your hair from the cold.

• Wear a hat or scarf: Always cover your hair when you’re outside, but make sure your hat is lined with satin or silk to prevent frizz and breakage. A more convenient option is to wear your silk scarf or bonnet under your hat.

• Go for protective styles: Loose buns, twists, or braids can minimize exposure to the elements and reduce breakage.

4. Combat the Dry Indoor Air

It’s not just the cold outside that dries out your hair—indoor heating can do some damage, too.

• Invest in a humidifier: This little device can add moisture to the air and make a big difference for your hair (and your skin).

• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in healthy fats, like avocados, salmon, and nuts, to keep your hair hydrated from the inside out.

5. Be Gentle with Heat Styling

Your hair is already under stress from the weather, so try to give it a break from heat styling.

• Always use a heat protectant: If you need to use hot tools, don’t skip the heat protectant spray—it’s a must!

6. Snip Those Split Ends

Winter can make your ends extra fragile, so regular trims are key. A quick trim every 4-6 weeks will help prevent split ends from traveling up your hair shaft and keep your hair looking fresh.

7. Treat Yourself to Professional Care

Sometimes your hair needs a little more than an at-home routine, and that’s okay!

• Steam treatments: These are perfect for adding moisture back into your hair and improving elasticity.

• Protein treatments: Strengthen your strands and protect against breakage.

If you’re not sure what your hair needs, I’d love to help you figure it out.

Winter doesn’t have to be the enemy of your hair! With these simple tips, you can keep your hair hydrated, protected, and looking its best—no matter how cold it gets outside. Remember, a little care goes a long way, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
